Blog Carnivals - Another avenue for exposure

Yesterday, Athletic Alley instituted our first ever blog carnival. Now, for those that do not know what a blog carnival is, let me explain real quick. Wikipedia list it as "A blog carnival is a type of blog event. It is similar to a magazine, in that it is dedicated to a particular topic, and is published on a regular schedule, often weekly or monthly.[1] Each edition of a blog carnival is in the form of a blog article that contains permalinks to other blog articles on the particular topic.".

Blog Carnival describes it as such: A Blog Carnival is a particular kind of blog community. There are many kinds of blogs, and they contain articles on many kinds of topics. Blog Carnivals typically collect together links pointing to blog articles on a particular topic. A Blog Carnival is like a magazine. It has a title, a topic, editors, contributors, and an audience. Editions of the carnival typically come out on a regular basis (e.g. every monday, or on the first of the month). Each edition is a special blog article that consists of links to all the contributions that have been submitted, often with the editors opinions or remarks.

The blog carnival that we have started is for the world of sports. So you ask, why am I talking about it here? Well, it is simple really. Blog Carnival has many other topics too, including Real Estate. Bottom line is when it is filled out correctly, it can bring you a ton of exposure and best of all, pingbacks. This will help with your Search engine optimization.

Rich Dansereau is the author to Athletic Alley Blog Carnival that actually post each and every Wednesday on Athletic Alley. It is easy to submit an article to him through a form that looks like the screenshot of the widget shown here. All you have to do is click it and it will take you to the submission page. The other way is to find the one that you are looking for on Blog Carnival.

Once you have filled out the form the first time, it is generally emailed to you each and every week to ask if you have another submission. Now, in doing this, I would not recommend that you link more than one article a week per carnival. Using multiple carnivals is a great idea, but using one multiple times for the same edition is generally bad. The author will usually kick you off. So, check out the carnivals today and get more exposure.

Stress - Power Quotes Series

Stress is simply a fact of nature. It is described as "forces from the outside world affecting the individual". It is a normal part of life that can either help us learn and grow or can cause us significant problems. It is just according to how we react to it.

Stress releases powerful neurochemicals and hormones that prepare us for action (to fight or flee) while many behaviors that increase in times of stress and maladaptive ways of coping with stress—drugs, pain medicines, alcohol, smoking, and eating—actually worsen the stress and can make us more reactive (sensitive) to further stress. Prolonged, uninterrupted, unexpected, and unmanageable stresses are the most damaging types of stress.

Many people believe that stress can be managed with a healthy diet and excerise. I for one believe that you can add a glass of red wine a night to that treatment and it too will help with the effects of stress. A good all over body massage is another avenue to help in the management of stress.

I hope that you find something here that will help to inspire you also. Click on the pictures and they will take you to other post that will help keep you informed.

"How we perceive a situation and how we react to it is the basis of our stress. If you focus on the negative in any situation, you can expect high stress levels. However, if you try and see the good in the situation, your stress levels will greatly diminish."
Catherine Pulsifer, from My Story

"Stress is not what happens to us. It's our response TO what happens. And RESPONSE is something we can choose."
Maureen Killoran

"When you find yourself stressed, ask yourself one question: Will this matter in 5 years from now? If yes, then do something about the situation. If no, then let it go."
Catherine Pulsifer

"Even to much sunshine can be devastating, while only with rain can growth occur. Accept both as part of the growing process in the garden of life."
Donald S. Neviaser

“Stress is simply the adaptation of our bodies and minds to change; and change, as we noted, is about the only constant left in the workplace.”
Peter G. Hanson, M.D.

"Don't sweat the small stuff... and it's all small stuff."
Richard Carlson

“If you are distressed by anything external, the pain is not due to the thing itself, but to your estimate of it; and this you have the power to revoke at any moment.”
Marcus Aurelius

"The time to relax is when you don't have time for it."

I decided that I would take the time today to not focus on one section of quotes, but to find some very inspiring quotes about everything.I think that I have found 10 very great quotes over time.

There is no use trying, said Alice; one can't believe impossible things. I dare say you haven't had much practice, said the Queen. When I was your age, I always did it for half an hour a day. Why, sometimes I've believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast.
Lewis Carroll

The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore all progress depends on the unreasonable man.

Simplicity - Power Quotes Series

Dictionary.com list Simplicity as:

Dictionary.com Unabridged (v 1.1) - Cite This Source - Share This 1.the state, quality, or an instance of being simple. 2.freedom from complexity, intricacy, or division into parts: an organism of great simplicity. 3.absence of luxury, pretentiousness, ornament, etc.; plainness: a life of simplicity. 4.freedom from deceit or guile; sincerity; artlessness; naturalness: a simplicity of manner. 5.lack of mental acuteness or shrewdness: Politics is not a field for simplicity about human nature.

The greatest epitome to me of simplicity comes from the Movie Philadelphia when Joe Miller (Denzel Washington) tells Andrew Beckett (Tom Hanks) to explain it to him like he is a 3 year old.

I hope that you find some sense of inspiration here in these quotes. Also, the pictures are linked for your enjoyment. Click on one and take a ride to another world.

Frank A. Clark

"The best things in life are nearest: Breath in your nostrils, light in your eyes, flowers at your feet, duties at your hand, the path of right just before you. Then do not grasp at the stars, but do life's plain, common work as it comes, certain that daily duties and daily bread are the sweetest things in life."Robert Louis Stevenson

"To find the universal elements enough; to find the air and the water exhilarating; to be refreshed by a morning walk or an evening saunter... to be thrilled by the stars at night; to be elated over a bird's nest or a wildflower in spring - these are some of the rewards of the simple life."
John Burroughs

"As you simplify your life, the laws of the universe will be simpler; solitude will not be solitude, poverty will not be poverty, nor weakness weakness."
Henry David Thoreau

"Precisely the least, the softest, lightest, a lizard's rustling, a breath, a flash, a moment - a little makes the way of the best happiness."
Frederich Nietzsche

"Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication."

Evolution of a Blogger - 200,000 points and 1 year later...

Well, at this point, neither have quite arrived, but they both will before the end of the week. I wanted to go ahead and write this and get it out of the way. It is good to reflect back on what was, but I am more of a person that lives in the "now" and what could be. Changing the past is not an option; paving the future is a requirement. Here is my story.

On August 15, 2007 I reluctantly joined ActiveRain. The reason that I say reluctantly, is because I had joined similar networks and nothing had panned out for me. Boy was that far from the truth here. I was invited to join by Lee Parrish, a former employee of mine when I managed a branch for Countrywide's Full Spectrum Lending in Fort Myers, Florida back in 2004-2006 before moving back to Georgia. One of the things that I knew about Lee was that he had no hype in his pitch. If he was behind it, it was solid. So, reluctantly, I bit.

My first post was something simple. It was called "Introduction" and it did not get a lot of response. As a matter of fact, there was a total of 3 comments ever posted to it. The first person ever to comment on it was Pamela Williamson St.Louis, Missouri Real Estate. And so started my blogging life. I can't say that I follow Pamela. I should since she is in a state that I do loans in. Even though I do not follow her, I feel a special connection as she was my first here.

One of the reasons that my first post flopped was the fact that it was not in any groups. I think the biggest reason for the flop was the fact that I sat around trying to figure it all out for myself. And boy was that difficult. I never knew that you should post your comments to Groups until I wrote "Where to post at. - Help please".Then is when it came together as the first comment that came off that post was from Bill Gassett. Well, that was all that I needed to hear. For you that know me, you know I do not do anything half-@$$. Here is what Bill said;

Danny - You need to post your blogs to groups that are here on AR. The are literally thousands of them. You are able to post to five groups of your choosing. You should post to a group that would be appropriate for your topic. From the main login in screen you can see what some of the most popular groups are. Join a few and start posting to those groups.

Now really, that was quite easy to understand. So, I went and joined and that was when it all changed. Since that time, I have written many tutorials as have other people on how to work on this platform and hopefully making your time here easier.  It is also where I met one of the most influential people to my blogging life. He was instrumental in keeping me on the path when all else seemed bleak. The time that I wanted to quit, he told me that if I loved it, stick with it, If I didn't, then it was not meant to be. Rick Gelinas, better know as BLR Guy around these parts, became the friend and mentor that I needed and I owe him for that. He is not here as much anymore and he is greatly missed, not just by me, but by the people that loved his jokes.

I took Bill's suggestion about groups to another level and decided that I would create my own. Soon, I gave life to Fantasy Sports 101. Since that time, I created The Movie Club, Wine Lovers of ActiveRain, Baseball Talk 101, and the most recent was Nothing but the Positive. This was my way to give back to the community that had given me so much. Nothing but the Positive has to be the most successful group as it houses 267 members that have share closed to 1000 post. I am proud of all the groups that I have created.

One of the groups that I joined was ActiveRain Addicts founded by Adam Waldman. I am not sure what made me wait almost 30 days from joining this group as I was addicted after the first week, Adam's group lead me to so many new people that I was jonesing and I swear that has to be me in that picture. I needed more and more. When I joined this group is when things started to open up for me. I met the other two moderators for this group, Jason Crouch and Paul Slaybaugh.

Once in this group, and from influence of BLR Guy, I wrote funny post like Spider Research - How drugs effect spiders, SEC Quiz, and Bubba's new Truck. These pushed me up in exposure and I had found somewhat of a niche. I could make people laugh in a time of gloom and doom. It felt good. I would find out later that my writing would change.

One of the first Realtors that I met on-line was Brande Bradford of Bradford Realty Group out of Morrow, Georgia. Brande was someone that I could relate to. She was a direct, to the point, straight shooter, and knew how to stay positive. I can still today remember our first conversations. "This is Brande Bradford. I am one of those pesky Realtors on ActiveRain." That was all I needed to know I liked her style. Over the time she has evolved and grown under her new tutor. Brande also gave me my first closing referral from ActiveRain.

In November, Rich Dansereau joined though an invitation that I had sent him. He is a loan officer that came over when Coutrywide started shutting down branches. He is a great loan officer that understands customer service. He is also the second part of The Thornton Team. Rich would become the developer of our website as well as one of the biggest referrals to ActiveRain that I would experience. He has evolved his own voice and carries a following that loves to read his style of writing. In his evolution process, he was able to start and outside blog called LocalExpert. He was also very instrumental in the developing and naming of Athletic Alley.

As I had said before, my writing would change. What I did not know was what would spur it and how it would change. On December 3, 2007 I wrote a post titled ActiveRain is a WHOLE community. It was in my case defending a person's right to be themselves without persecution. Little did I know that it would spur so much response. The purpose that it was written for opened the door to another opportunity.

I had started a series on 11/28/2007 called the Power Quotes Series. Since that time there has been 98 of them written. This Friday will be number 100 and I plan to make that a special one. Anyone have suggestions for the topic, please email it to me.

I have greatly enjoyed my time here. I could sit back and talk of all the experiences that I have met. I could introduce you to people that I have talked to for hours and people that I have talked to for minutes, but I think you get the point. As for me, my membership with ActiveRain is not so much what I can put in as it is so much what I can get out. For those that do not know, I have always been one to wear my emotions on my shoulder. Times are tough for us all in this industry. I have learned to branch out and use the blogging knowledge that I have learned to make a little pocket change. I have even been able to realize a dream and start my own website that has become a small source of revenue through small contributions and through Google's Adsense program. As we struggle through to make ends meet, you can count on one thing from me. I will always be here to bring as much "sunshine" to your day as I can.

Friends are plentiful here in the rain and I wish that I could sit here and name you all out, but I can't do that. What I can say is this. I am very appreciative of my subscribers as they are my regular readers and without them, we are nothing. I also want to thank all the people that moderate groups for me. They have a thankless job and I do not want to be part of the group that does not say THANK YOU.

I have enjoyed my time here and look forward to another year and another 200,000 points. Thank you for your continued support.

Update on NFL Preview - 20 teams

For those of you that follow me you know that I have been doing a NFL football team a day giving my perspective of what I think their team will do for this year on SportsFanatic. This is my sports blog on Today that I originally started prior to AthleticAlley. So far I have done the first 20 teams taking it alphabetically. Now that my reader base has expanded, I decided to give an update to everyone on this side also. Each one is linked and if the title is not clear on the team, I have placed the team name in parentheses so that you will know. I appreciate all the support in the past and in the future. Without you the reader, this site could not exist.

Self Confidence - Power Quotes Series

Self confidence might be the one thing that eludes so many people. I have heard too many times over my career from people that think they possess self confidence only to cave when the pressure is on.

Too many people find a crutch that they can use in life to off-set the lack of self confidence. It is easy to catch ourselves doing this.

I hope that you find some quote below that will inspire your day. I have also picked out two other post that I have that I think goes along with this. One is a football review and the other is on being positive. Check both out.

"Someone's opinion of you does not have to become your reality."
Les Brown

"Self-confidence is the first requisite to great undertakings."
Samuel Johnson

"Try to arrange your schedule so that you will not have to hurry. Hurry, a blood brother to worry, helps shatter poise and self-confidence, and contributes to fear and anxiety."
Author Unknown, from Ten Ways to Worry Less and Accomplish More

"Smile, for everyone lacks self-confidence and more than any other one thing a smile reassures them."
Andre Maurois

"Confidence is half of victory."
Yiddish Proverb

"I was always looking outside myself for strength and confidence but it comes from within. It is there all the time."
Anna Freud

"Calm self-confidence is as far from conceit as the desire to earn a decent living is remote from greed."
Channing Pollock

"With greater confidence in yourself and your abilities, you will set bigger goals, make bigger plans and commit yourself to achieving objectives that today you only dream about."
Brian Tracy

"Whatever we expect with confidence becomes our own self-fulfilling prophecy."
Brian Tracy

Support Charities through Auctions

One of the main ways that charities remain in business is for people to help them by giving donations. A while back the group "Blog for a Cause" was started on ActiveRain. It is a great group as you can promote the cause that you would like to see get some support. Well, tonight, I am going to tell you about a site that I found that is also helping out.

It is a site that you can go on to buy items like a macbookair and at least 25% of the net proceeds will be donated to a charity. Now, first off, any amount of net proceeds from a retailer going to charity is a great thing, much less a minimum of 25%. That in itself makes me want to spend my money with them today.

Auctions4aCause.com runs a unique bidding program. The participants bid for a particular item by submitting blind or sealed (i.e. secret) bids: the winner is the bidder who places the highest unique bid. You can actually get items for 80-90% off the retail price. By becoming a member, you get to influence how much your selected charity receives by placing bids in our auctions. With those kinds of odds, I don't know what has kept me away from this.

Auctions4aCause.com has been holding these types of auctions since the Fall of 2003. They are the first of the kind and has revolutionized the Auction world with this concept. If you are into supporting charities then this is definitely a site that you need to check out today.
